Pagination Pains

Back when I had my own small publishing company, and even before that when I worked in the educational sector as a photojournalist and co-administrator for a busy public relations department, I did a lot of interviewing, writing, photography, proofing, and editing, as well as  layout and design. I worked on many proofs and bluelines throughout my career with actual humans at print shops. (Yes, I know, I'm a dinosaur—🦖)! Never once was pagination an issue.

These days it is definitely more economically feasible to publish books via digital printing on a popular site. You can't beat the cost-savings of print-on-demand and drop shipping, as opposed to purchasing a supply of printed books up front (and that can get quite expensive), storing them, selling them through various mediums, then packaging them up, weighing them, and mailing the books by traveling to a post office and standing in line with an armload of packages waiting your turn.

However, even with the current way giving ease to publishing, a new frustration is when after uploading the digital files to an online publishing house and receiving a perfectly beautiful proof, you then hit "publish," only to receive a notice that there is an issue with the pagination.

What?

I've successfully helped clients publish their books via this publishing route, and had no pagination issues, but now I have one with my own book. Color me puzzled.

I did a quick search online and soon discovered this is a topic of conversation for other authors, too, and felt a bit of relief. So, Fellow Author Friends, I ask you—Have you experienced issues with pagination once you've approved the proof and thought you were "ready to print?"

Hmmm...this publishing/print dinosaur will figure it out.

Until next time...

Dorothy
